Recently, Clodronate was reported to benefit women with newly diagnosed breast cancer. A clinical trial involving approximately 300 women found that Clodronate, coupled with standard surgery, radiation and chemotherapy, helped prevent the spread of breast cancer. At the time of their diagnosis, all of the women in the study had identifiable breast cancer cells in their bone marrow, but no other evidence of spread of the cancer. Women who received Clodronate had better survival, fewer secondary cancers in bone, and surprisingly, fewer secondary cancers in soft tissues (liver/lung) as well. The reduction in spread of breast cancer to bone is partially understood, but the reduction in spread of cancers to soft tissue was surprising and without explanation.
